A beautiful sight, we’re happy tonight/Walking in a winter wonderland–Felix Bernard and Richard B. Smith, “Winter Wonderland” (1934)
Tour winter wonderlands in Europe in under two weeks!
You can enjoy a winter wonderland tour of some of the best places in Europe — Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland– in less than two weeks. Veteran visitors confirm that winter is the best time to interact with the locals, snack on homemade gingerbread and sample some mulled wine in colorful Christmas markets. All you need is a plane ticket and a rental car.
Give yourself a day for getting to Frankfurt, Germany. Relax. Unwind.
See the Rhine Valley as you head for Mainz. Enjoy a stroll through the Cathedral Quarter and take in the historical architecture. Head out to Rothenburg-ob-der-Tauber. The medieval walls transport you back to the 16th century. Follow the cobblestone streets to the medieval Market Square.
Head for Munich. See the Victory Arch, the Marienplatz with its colorful Glockenspiel, and have a foam-headed stein of beer at the world-famous Hofbräuhaus.
Check out Lake Chiemsee before crossing the border into Austria into Salzburg. Visit Mirabell Palace where the “Do, Re, Mi” scene was filmed for The Sound of Music, the Hohensalzburg Fortress and Mozart’s birthplace on the Getreidegasse.
Take a scenic snow-capped mountain drive to Innsbruck. See the Wilten Basilica, the Imperial Palace and Golden Roof in the Old Town. Enjoy a horse-drawn carriage ride and a medieval banquet in a building that’s over 700 years old.
Liechtenstein And Switzerland
Cruise to Vaduz, the capital of this principality. Enjoy the winter scenery in one of Europe’s smallest countries. Cross the Swiss border and stop in lakeside Lucerne.
Learn the history of the Lion Monument. Shop for holiday gifts. Swiss watches and chocolate make great gifts. Ride a cable car up Mount Pilatus then return to stroll on a lakeside promenade and explore the medieval watchtowers too.
Switzerland & Germany
Before you leave, pull over in Schaffhausen and watch the cold Rhine River thunder over the Rhine Falls. Cross back into Germany. Take in the chilly Black Forest, the town of Heidelberg, stroll on the banks of the river Neckar and see the red sandstone castle there. Check out the old “Student Prison” too.
Say goodbye to Frankfurt, Germany. Fly home. Unpack and unwind.
